Silvi said, ‘I want to use some cream for my baby’s flakey skin.’ I replied, ‘use coconut oil!’ It’s safe and uniquely moisturising and extremely nourishing for babies skin, as well as for the Mamas! Cold-pressed, virgin, unrefined, organic coconut oil is perfect for massaging into your baby’s skin if it appears a little dry or if your baby has cradle-cap. Best used after bath-time on damp skin and/or when your baby is quiet and it’s possible for you to lightly massage a small amount of the coconut oil into the skin to help with dryness.
Massaging your baby is also an excellent way to bond with your baby and to give him/her the benefits of massage such as relaxation, aiding digestion and improving circulation for healthy growth and development. “Affectionate touch and rhythmic movement are among the most powerful forms of communication between babies and their parents, so they’re great ways for you to bond,” says K. Mark Sossin, PhD, director of the Parent-Infant Research Nursery at Pace University, in New York City. It has in fact been proven that baby massage helps with regulating serotonin production thereby inducing relaxation and feelings of security and calm. Use gentle, smooth, gliding strokes always in the direction of the heart. You can also lightly manipulate the wrists and ankles, fingers and toes.
It’s important you choose your coconut oil carefully, being sure to avoid any refined varieties or those with added perfumes, synthetic preservatives or paraffinum liquidum (mineral oil). Make sure your jar’s only ingredient is coconut oil! Nothing else!
There will be a slight coconut smell which disappears after some time on the body. Coconut oil will also solidify at temperatures lower than about 24 degrees celsius. So if it solidifies just rub it between your hands until it melts to warm it before applying to your baby’s skin.
Coconut oil is totally safe, and if your baby licks his/her fingers or toes no problem! Far, far safer than ‘Baby oil’ which is basically refined from crude oil, the same stuff that gives us petrol and plastics, it’s a mineral oil which actually cannot be absorbed by the skin. Yuk! Go with unrefined, organic coconut oil instead!
You can look for it in Wholefoods Market, independent organic health food shops or online organic health and beauty stores. Remember that the same oil that you can use on your baby’s body you can also use on yourself and for cooking; baking, soups, sauces, purees. Yum!
